Lithophany [from the Greek lithos (stone) and phainein (transpire) requires a highly developed manufacturing skill and was introduced in Portugal by Vista Alegre between 1860 and 1869.
To commemorate the 195th year since its founding, Vista Alegre has launched an exclusive production of a lithophane showing the facades of the Vista Alegre Porcelain Factory and the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha de França, its Patroness. The artisanal technique is replaced by a more highly developed technology.
Based on high-quality photographs, the entire design was computer generated. Subsequently, this graphic work was transposed to a 3D program that generated the undulations that create the different tones of gray when the piece is lighted.
In order to guarantee maximum translucence, the porcelain is only 1.5 mm thick.
This special commemorative edition of Litofania Vista Alegre is a symbol of the manufacturing excellence and artistic precision that defines this nearly two hundred year-old brand.
